Dassel-Cokato delivered its best body shots to Eden Prairie. Knocking out the Eagles was going to be a more difficult task.
Brett Thorney hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning, capping a five-run rally as Eden Prairie outlasted Dassel-Cokato 11-9 in a wild Class 3A baseball tournament semifinal Thursday at Midway Stadium. The Eagles (23-7) will play Cretin-Derham Hall (25-4) for the championship today.
"It was a very intense game," Thorney said. "There were a lot of ups and downs. We had to keep battling back."
The Eagles tied it at 9-9 on Gopher recruit Kyle Geason's three-run homer earlier in the inning. He was hitless in three previous plate appearances.
"I was a little frustrated from the inning before," Geason said. "I was looking for a fastball I could put a good cut on."
The Chargers (20-6) scored four times in top half of the inning, despite only getting two hits, and took a 9-6 lead. There were two hit batters, a walk, two wild pitches and a passed ball in the inning.
"We had a bad inning, and had to get through it," Geason said. "We had some mental errors, but came up big at the end."
Dassel-Cokato built a 5-0 lead in the first two innings, only to see Eden Prairie score six unanswered runs. Scott Lindner hit a three-run homer in the fourth and Dan Fagerhaug's solo shot in the following inning gave the Eagles a 6-5 lead.
Luke Peterson went 2-for-4 and scored three runs for the Chargers. The junior tied it with a triple in sixth before scoring on Dan Raisanen's single as Dassel-Cokato regained the lead.
"That was the good, bad and ugly," Eagles coach Mike Halloran said. "The good was at the end. We feel very fortunate to have won that game."
